black-hawk-logoBlack Hawk College is a comprehensive community college serving over 11,000 college credit students, 3,000 Adult Basic Education students and 16,000 Continuing Education and Workforce Training adults a year with cost-effective lifelong learning. Two campuses offer excellent facilities, small class size and individual attention. The Quad-Cities Campus is located in Moline, Illinois and the East Campus is near Kewanee, Illinois. ISE recently spoke with Lucille Bealer and Jana Arpy of Black Hawk College to discuss their use of EnterpriseSCHEDULE to control and submit their Sunguard SCT Banner jobs. Banner is a widely used collegiate administrative solution that Black Hawk College uses to administer a large part of their internal data concerning student records and financial aid. Their challenge was to eliminate the need for manual operator interaction to enter necessary parameters so the jobs could be run automatically. By automating the process they could reduce the number of employees performing monotonous manual job submission. More...

There are many other types of problems that are faced by every data center. Routine production operations from batch processing, archiving to tape, and disk and file optimization can form a large part of both the system managers and the system operators everyday workloads. Reducing this workload greatly enhances the efficiency of your data center and productivity overall, as well as avoiding the costly mistakes and staff dissatisfaction that result from regular mundane tasks.

SCHEDULE allows you to automate production tasks from sophisticated business-critical procedures to simple routine backups. In fact, once a production schedule has been developed, there is little need for further intervention until the system changes.

MEDIA is divided into three distinct functions:

  1. Media Librarian - The librarian keeps track of all types of removable media that you need to manage. A central database is maintained that discribes each medium. From what files are on it, to what type removable medium drive it can be used on.
  2. Backup Manager - The manager keeps track of all backup jobs whether they are local or remote. Each job defines what disks are to be backed up. They type of backup, incremental, full etc. Each entry identifies what media have been used and when the each was performed.
  3. Restore System - The restore system allows the user or manager to easily query the database to determine what is needed to restore a file, directory or an entire disk drive. The amount of information is governed by the access rights of the requesting user.

What is the recommended way for moving jobs from one Schedule server to another Schedule server?

The recommended way of moving jobs and database objects is to use the extract template called template_db.schedule in

Windows - "c:\program files\Ise\enterpriseSCHEDULE" (or %schedule_library%)
VMS - schedule_library
Unix - /schedule_library

You can edit this text file and read the top portion to see the syntax of an extract command. Here is an example from a cmd session for extracting a job call job1 from node1 and then inserting the job into node2: More...

How do you grant group access to a job or folder?

EnterpriseSCHEDULE features the concept of Groups to grant access to jobs and folders in the database. This allows any member of a group to access a job or folder they normally wouldn't have access to. The access can be:

AllAccess - Grant access to the entire database
ReadAll - Grant read access to the entire database
SubmitAny - Grant ability to submit any job
ChangeUser - Grant ability to change the user of a job
Disabled - Deny all types of access to this user   More...

ISE & EnterpriseSCHEDULE had a very busy week last week at the Microsoft TechEd conference in Orlando, where we made hundreds of new friends and received a number of new customers.  It was a tremendous reception for our systems. Our future conference schedule includes the HPWorld conference in San Francisco, from August 14th through the 18th and the HP Technology Forum in New Orleans from September 11th through the 15th.  If you will be attending either of these events, please let us know so that we can schedule some time to evaluate your requirements and how EnterpriseSCHEDULE or EnterpriseBACKUP can satisfy those needs.
