EnterpriseSCHEDULE helps United Natural Food's operations stay healthy

unf-logoUnited Natural Foods is the largest publicly traded wholesale distributor to the natural and organic foods industry. Carrying more than 32,000 SKUs, the Company supplies over 14,000 customers nationwide and services a wide variety of retail formats, including super natural chains, independent natural products retailers and conventional supermarkets.

Providing information systems support to such a massive operation can be pretty taxing on a staff but according to Ron Donohue of UNF , it is a lot easier using EnterpriseSCHEDULE from ISE. When they came to ISE for a solution to their OpenVMS and Windows batch scheduling woes, UNF had been summarily dissatisfied with the scheduling product they were using. With a total of about 600 jobs running on a Daily, Weekly, Monthly and Yearly basis, the previous scheduler was unreliable and often ran unscheduled processes. More...

EnterpriseSCHEDULE

SCHEDULE is organized using a client/server architecture. Jobs are stored in a directory structure that provides organization and security from unauthorized access.  SCHEDULE is organized as a server process with client programs. The server is the engine that works in a detached process to submit jobs for execution when appropriate. It reschedules jobs based on your instructions, and it constantly checks to see which jobs are due to be executed. In addition, the server process performs all database I/O, network communications, and scheduling state changes. You pass information to the server process using any of the user interfaces described in the later section `User interfaces'. These user interfaces act as client programs to the SCHEDULE server. The clients pass information to the server to request some action to be taken, such as submitting a job to be executed.

EnterpriseBACKUP

There are three types of MEDIA commands: DATABASE commands, job commands and device commands.

Database commands: These are commands that search, modify, or add to the on-line database. Database commands include DIRECTORY, RENAME_TO and SET. You will use this type of command most often.
Job commands: These MEDIA commands allow for the passing of VMS commands and command files to a separate MEDIA job. The VMS commands needed to allocate a drive and mount and dismount the tape are automatically added.
Device commands: These commands affect the storage devices directly, and include: MOUNT, INITIALIZE, ALLOCATE and UPDATE. These are not usually used by the general user because they require the presence of an OPERATOR to immediately respond to the command.

SCHEDULE Tool Tip

Hey, Support@i-s-e.com why didn't my job run as it was supposed to?

This is one of the most common questions received at ISE. Sometimes it helps to see how Schedule is orchestrating the commands/scripts that you have declared in the job. In many cases, the commands are run but the expected results are not obtained. Quite often these unexpected results are caused by environmental or operational reasons. More...
