An online media database

The MEDIA database is accessible on-line, allowing you to find any particular medium and what files it contains at any time, without having to mount each medium or rely on a manually updated information system. The database consists of information about every tape and removable disk or other storage device in the library. Whenever a medium is modified, the on-line information is automatically updated to reflect the new contents.

There are two types of informational files about media:

The header information file contains information about each medium, tape type, length, density, format, disk size, protection, initialization and availability status.
The contents information file is an optional on-line file that lists the contents of each medium, all of the files written on the medium and information about each file (creation date, version number, size). It is necessary to include a file specification in the DIRECTORY command to access the contents information file.

Both header and contents information files can be accessed using the MEDIA command DIRECTORY.

Tool Tip - Set ids and layouts

What is a set id and how is it used in a layout?

When a job is submitted either manually, by a rescheduling setting or by being initiated by another job it is given a set id. The set id is a number that identifies the specific instance of the job running and includes any other jobs that are connected either by initiates or prerequisites. The set id is generated by the EnterpriseSCHEDULE server process sequentially and appears in the top bar of the layout window. The default set id that appears in the layout is the most recent.

So how is a set id useful in scheduling?

Set ids are extremely helpful when jobs run frequently and it is necessary to track the status of each run. This especially comes into play with job streams since all jobs in a stream share the same set id. Identifying what instance of a job run was initiated at a certain time is a valuable tool when tracking job history.

How are set ids displayed in layouts?

There are several options for what set ids are displayed in layouts. The job icon status and variable updates will be displayed based on the method chosen. To access the set id display mode in the Windows client, right click on the layout and select Layout Controls and click on the Jobs tab.

  1. Highest active id (Default) - The default view mode is Highest Active id. The most recent set id for any job in the layout is updated in the display.

  2. All ids- All set ids for jobs in the display are updated.

  3. Specific id - A specific id for jobs in the display can be specified. This is useful if a recent past run is still active.
